Com uma extensão total (2013) de 12,845 km´s, a autobahn, é uma das maiores e mais ocupadas vias rápidas do Mundo.
O primeiro troço foi inaugurado em 1932, entre Colónia e Bona.
Em 1935, a extensão total era de apenas 108 kms.
Este é um processo de exploração de uma das mais conhecidas auto-estradas do Mundo. É também uma das vias rápidas com o número mais alto de automóveis a cruzar, visto ser no centro da Europa.
